OSIEK is an international society whose aims are to organize International Conferences in Esperanto (IEK) at a high and independant cultural level. Discussions and exchanges of ideas, for example after lectures, as well as tourism furthering reciprocal interethnic understanding and appreciation, contribute to the development of truly international culture. OSIEK organizes, supports and furthers cultural activities in Esperanto.

The International Esperanto Conference takes place during the third complete week of July or just before the World Congress of Esperanto: from Saturday evening to the following Friday. On Sunday a number of works are considered to award the annual OSIEK prize. These works are on display throughout the week, when they can be bought or studied. During the week there are lectures, seminars and courses, mostly in the mornings, and excursions and shows in the afternoons and evenings. Each talk is followed by questions and discussions, for which time is set aside. Apart from the main subject of the Conference, there is a talk about the place where the Conference is held. The Annual General Meeting of OSIEK takes place on Friday. All are welcome to put forward ideas and join in the discussions, but only members may vote for the OSIEK-prize of for the location and subject of the next IEK. The Conference is followed by excursions extending over three days. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The atmosphere of the IEK is friendly and scholarly. Fewer than a hundred people attend the talks and this preserves the pleasant atmosphere. The participants democratically choose the subject of the Conference. It can be on an Esperanto thema of otherwise. The aim of the IEK is to enrich the culture and the articulateness in Esperanto. Although IEK is designed for fluent speakers of Esperanto, a course can be laid on for beginners attending the Conference. It is not a kind of summer university; all the participants are on an equal footing with the lectures, and so the discussions following the talks are often longer than the talks themselves. The talks are basically analyses of the Conference subject from various points of view, namely social, scientific, historical, philosophical, linguistic etc. from La Gazeto, n. 54 |
